Pag, the island of cheese and salt, is positioned in the northern Adriatic under the mountain of Velebit. Pag is the fifth largest island in Croatia, and one with the longest coastline. It’s one of the sunniest islands in the Adriatic Sea with many lovely, sandy beaches. Even though it’s an island, it can be reached by bridge from the south or by ferry from the north side. Due to the strong “Bura” wind, the island has very little vegetation, but many stone walls built by shepherds and farmers permit some cultivation on the island.
Croatia party destination – Novalja
In recent years, Pag has become an increasingly popular island to visit because the resort of Novalja that is considered one of Croatia’s leading party destinations. With a reasonable number of open-air clubs which are also the venue of several summer music festivals, Novalja is the ideal spot for those who want to party away their holiday. The main resort on the island, beside Novalja, is Pag city that was built according to plans by the famous Croatian Renaissance builder, Juraj Dalmatinac. Pag city has a lovely old town with streets constructed in squares. In the old town you can also see the last remaining tower from the prior fortification, several old churches and the duke´s palace from the 15th century.
Pag Town is also well-known for its carnival, with both a ‘winter’ and summer version. The Paško kolo is a traditional folk dance that is regularly performed during the carnival. The island is also very famous for its lacemaking, and the local cheese – Paški sir (meaning, Pag cheese) – that is made from sheep’s milk. If you visit island Pag, you must sample both.
